How to make a presentation without PowerPoint

You need slides by tomorrow and you do not have PowerPoint. This is a solved problem — there are several free routes, and at least one of them needs nothing more than a browser tab.

The fastest route: build it in your browser

No installation, no account, no licence.

1. Open the presentation tool Go to the free presentation maker. It opens with a title slide ready to edit.
2. Write your first slide Click straight into the title and type. Click the subtitle and type there too.
3. Add slides Use New slide in the Home tab, or pick a layout from the Insert tab — title, section header, or title and content.
4. Pick a theme The Design tab has five themes. Switching one restyles every slide at once, so you are never applying a colour scheme slide by slide.
5. Add speaker notes The box below the slide holds notes only you see when presenting.
6. Present Press F5 or the Present button. Arrow keys or a click advance, Escape exits.

Free alternatives compared

Choose by constraint rather than features. If your blocker is the licence, LibreOffice Impress is the most complete free desktop option. If it is time, a browser tool wins. If it is privacy — a board deck, salary figures, unannounced plans — you want something that does not upload your file at all.

Making a deck that works

The tool matters less than the deck. A few things carry most of the weight:

• One idea per slide. If a slide needs two headings, it is two slides.
• Fewer words. Slides are not a document. Put the detail in the speaker notes, where it helps you and does not compete with you.
• Readable type. If you would not read it from the back of the room, neither will they.
• Consistent theme. Pick one and leave it. Mixed styling reads as rushed.
• Say the number. A chart nobody can read is decoration; the sentence you would say about it is the actual content.

Exporting to PowerPoint

You will often need a .pptx anyway — because a colleague wants to edit it, or the conference room machine runs PowerPoint.

File → Export as PowerPoint produces a real .pptx that opens in PowerPoint, Google Slides and Keynote, with your text, positions and images intact.

Opening an existing .pptx

If a deck already exists and you just need to edit it, drag the .pptx onto the page or use File → Import PowerPoint. Slides, text boxes, their positions and speaker notes come through. Animations, transitions and master layouts do not.
